Last season, quarterback luck cost the 49ers a Super Bowl participation. Brock Purdy, the 49ers' third-string quarterback and erstwhile Mr. Irrelevant, may be their future.
The NFC Championship Game injured Purdy. His replacement, fourth-string quarterback Josh Johnson, struggled against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Garoppolo and Purdy had performed admirably for Trey Lance, who was hurt in Week 2.
As trade talks between the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers simmer off,
Purdy's rehab timeline has raised the possibility that the 49ers might sign Aaron Rodgers, one of the best Packers of all time.
At the League Annual Meeting, 49ers general manager John Lynch stated Purdy deserved to start next season.
A 2022 seventh-round pick picked to backup 2020 first-round pick Lance received a great endorsement. Purdy's season-long health is uncertain.
Purdy told Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein he wasn't sure if he could play for the 49ers next season:
“That remains an early step in recovery,
Purdy saying Friday he’s “not really sure, honestly” whether he’ll play in 2023 as he takes it “one day at a time.” Mobility has improved recently.”
The 49ers have recently shown interest in Rodgers. The Jets and Packers cannot agree on compensation for the 39-year-old quarterback. Like the Jets, the 49ers are win-now.
The 49ers have a great defense and playmakers. Rodgers may have changed their NFC title game against the Eagles. If Purdy can't play, Rodgers could assist.
Ben Roethlisberger thinks Rodgers might play for the 49ers. Kyle Crabbs and Joe Marino discussed the 49ers' situation on Locked on NFL Scouting.
“Would Rodgers prefer the Jets or 49ers? He played college ball at Cal and prefers the west coast, so that looks appealing to him.”Rodgers' best options are the Jets and Packers.
The 49ers are a conference opponent, and the Jets have prepared Rodgers with 49 players and coaches he knows.
If the 49ers offered more than the Jets, the Packers might consider it. The team is ready for Jordan Love.
