Doja Cat claims she broke beauty rules

Doja Cat portrayed Choupette at the 2023 Met Gala. In a Vogue behind-the-scenes film, she called "avant-garde" fashion self-expression.

"I love to embrace everything," she remarked. "I like to think outside the box." At the 2023 Met Gala, which featured feline prosthetics, Doja Cat discussed her unconventional style.

The "Kiss Me More" singer says Karl Lagerfeld's adored cat Choupette inspired her in a Vogue behind-the-scenes film.

"Fashion expresses me. "Anytime I'm doing something avant-garde or out of the ordinary, it's another way for me to express myself and whoever I'm working with," she said.

"There's nothing like sending a message through what you're wearing and having a story behind something," she continued. "I think it's really refreshing to see when people do stuff like that."

This year's Met Gala honored Lagerfeld's fashion influence. Many celebrities wore black-and-white gowns, camellia flowers, and tweed, reminiscent of Lagerfeld's Chanel designs.

Others, like Doja, went all out with animalistic costumes. Creative director and stylist Brett Alan Nelson claimed "no one better" than Doja can sport "a very talked-about look."

He added that the Grammy winner enjoys "messing with the idea of beauty norms."

Doja replied that she's "not like other girls" since she likes pizza, chicken nuggets, and sweatpants.

"It's exhausting to take yourself so seriously to the point where you're limiting your experience in life," she said more honestly.

"I love to embrace everything," she added. I don't like to hide things or cover myself and assume that's my life forever. I think creatively."
